Solar Panel Tracking With RFID

Background
Many countries mandate that each solar panel or photovoltaic (PV) module must carry an RFID tag, so that it can be easily identified and tracked throughout its useful life. To China’s PV producers and distributors who want to sell their products internationally, they need to label their PV products with RFID tags. One PV module producer in China wants to update its PV tracking system in order to be more competitive.

Challenges
  1. In some cases, solar power deployments contain hundreds of modules from different manufacturers. PV modules look alike. Identity each module physically is a tedious and very limited option.
  2. Managers would like to know the performance and repair history of each and every individual module, so that to decide whether to replace a particular module for persistent bad performance.
  3. Manual reading, recording and cross-checking any data takes time, and automated, remote identification and data transfer is preferred.

Solution
The PV producer builds a cooperative relationship with Chainway. Every PV module has a RFID tag which is encoded with a unique serial number, brand, manufacture date, module type, peak wattage, Im, Vm and FF for the module and other relevant and related information. Chainway handheld RFID reader captures these information by scanning these tags. More information can also be written into each tag via Chainway device and transmitted to central database in real time under 3G or Wi-Fi connectivity.

Effects
  1. Detailed information of a PV module, including its manufacture data and maintenance data, can be registered and captured in the RFID tag.
  2. The high performance of Chainway handheld RFID reader enables to read dozens of modules simultaneously without physical contact between the reader and the tag. It is capable of quick and accurate tracking.
  3. With item-level visibility across manufacturing, distribution and application operations, it provides an efficient method for tracking modules that need to be removed from installations for repair.
