Background
Jiangxi Provincial Expressway Investment Group Co., Ltd. (JPEIG) is the expressway authority in Jiangxi province in Southeast China. The authority has been seeking an efficient system which allows electronic toll collection without delaying the movement of vehicles, in a both secure and reliable way.
Challenge
Ineffective manual highway tolls may delay traffic flow, which makes traffic jam even worse.
Unable to build wireless infrastructure means that those toll booths are unable to either receive the latest notice about toll rate changes, or to transmit their toll collection data to the company.
Solution
Chainway designs a RFID-based solution on JPEIG’s demands. Every toll booth is equipped with a Chainway handheld computer C5000. With a high-performance RFID reader and a stable and fast Wi-Fi connection, it reads driver’s contact-less stored-value card which has a unique ID number feasible to use with that vehicle only. HF RFID tags, handheld computers together with rechargeable smart cards offer the ability to build infrastructure-less toll systems
Effects
Using radio communication instead of cash reduces the long queues at toll booths. It eases traffic flow and facilitates toll collection process.
Chainway handheld computer captures, collects, and transmits real-time toll collection data with GPS information to the expressway’s backend database under 3G network.
Eliminating the traditional heavy construction and replacing it with more lightweight and less expensive technology-based solutions.
