Connected Railway | IoT for Train Maintenance

German national railway company used Chainway handheld computer in its IoT-based maintenance system.

Germany is one of Europe’s largest public transport markets - Deutsche Bahn (DB) moved more than 2 billion people every year. To improve maintenance procedures of tram and train operators, DB deployed IoT technology enabled handheld computers to read RFID tags and 1D barcode labels attached to rail vehicles’ major components.

The rugged handheld computers, provided by Shenzhen Chainway Information Technology Co. Ltd. (Chainway), are integrated with RFID and barcode capabilities to automate data collection and Wi-Fi connectivity to transmit them to the back-end server for further analysis and processing. The built-in computing functions enable yard staff to act on the data in real time. They can fill in forms and make notes, updating data seamlessly from anywhere in the yard.

Internet of Things (IoT) technology, including RFID, barcode, cloud computing, makes it possible to analyze and visualize data of trains for the cost effective maintenance planning. Chainway handheld computer captures tags implanted on each vehicle and transfers them to the database server in real time, where the collected data is filtered, integrated, and analyzed to take cost-effective maintenance decisions.

Therefore, with the help of Chainway handheld computer and RFID and barcode technologies, routine maintenance can be monitored and planned to control unforeseen breakdowns to ensure train operation. With the application of this technology in railway maintenance operation, data related to key components such as wagons can be analyzed and allow the wagon owners to plan proactive maintenance for non-disruptive track maintenance.

This Chainway handheld computer is available with windows operating systems that can run many standard business applications. To learn more, visit here.
