Connected Car | RFID Tracks Vehicles

The biggest Sino-foreign vehicle joint venture deploys Chainway handheld RFID reader to track their vehicles.

DFL Motor Company Limited (DFL) is an automobile manufacturing company headquartered in Wuhan, China and a 50:50 joint-venture between DFL Motor Corporation and Nissan Motors. DFL started to apply a RFID-based system in its vehicle logistics management (VLM) in 2004. Now 13 years have passed, DFL annual vehicle production has raised from 60 thousand to 1.5 million, and that number is expected to increase in the future. The RFID vehicle management system has played an everyday even bigger role in promoting the accuracy and efficiency in logistics and transportation.

This system consists of two subsystems: vehicle logistics management system (VLMS) and warehouse management system (WMS). It is designed to automate the identification and authentication of drayage trucks shipping and delivering cargos from DFL 40 distribution centers to 800 nationwide 4S shops. These trucks are operated by 5 third-party trucking companies, so security is another concerned issue.

Once a vehicle is manufactured and ready to be shipped, a RFID tag is mounted into the interior of the windshield. The vehicle identification number (VIN), description, make and model are written into the tag. Each drayage truck is also embedded with a RFID tag encoding cargo information, including truck unique ID number and loading information. At exit gates, staff hold Chainway handheld computers to scan RFID tags on the truck as well as on the vehicles. The two IDs are then associated in the firm's back-end database. In that way, information about the vehicle can be linked to the tag's RFID number. When appropriate, gates are opened to allow a tractor to leave.

Before starting shipping, truck drivers also read all the vehicle RFID tags with their Chainway handheld RFID readers to link VINs with the reader’s longitude and latitude coordinates. The VLMS, which operates both on the cloud-based server and on the handheld device, can store the location. Chainway handheld RFID reader’s GPS functionality identifies those tagged vehicles’ location and automatically send information per hour to the back-end server via a 3G network. If there is a network problem, the data is stored until the connection is resumed.

Drivers get paid on their driving time. Before this system, some drivers would intentionally stall for time to get more money. Now DFL saves 3.5 million US dollars every year from paying extra money to dishonest drivers. Plus, real-time movement of the drayage trucks lets the destination warehouses get full preparation to receive those autos.

The WMS tells warehouse workers in advance the receiving area of each truck in order to have enough workers in place for unloading vehicles. At the entrance gates, warehouse workers verify shipment received from the factory and those shipped to 4s stores, by comparing the received data from the back-end server with the scanned RFID information on handheld readers. If the two match, gates open for trucks to enter.

DFL utilizes this RFID-enabled system to prevent human errors and to make its high-volume shipping process and in-warehouse operations more transparent and leaner.
