Retail | Handheld Computer Enhances In-store Operations

A listed retail store in China has completed a radio frequency identification (RFID) system designed to track where items are and to display information regarding those products to customers.

The RFID-based solution includes ultrahigh-frequency (UHF) RFID tag, Chainway handheld computer, and software that manages data related to each read event. RFID systems are great for reading tags quickly. A store associate can take inventory of thousands of apparel items in one hour with a RFID-enabled handheld computer.

Employees periodically utilize Chainway handheld computer to track what merchandise is available on the shelves or on a hanging rail, providing real-time inventory-tracking and out-of-stock data. This gives better visibility from a managerial and corporate perspective, which in turn allows for better inventory management. Inventory tracking is the most common benefit that a RFID system can bring to retailers.

To customers, this system can let them learn more about a selected item. “We hope our customers have no difficulties in finding the suitable piece of merchandise”, says Mr. Wang Xiaoquan, the store’s manager. “If they are looking for a particular size or color, our employee can respond quickly.” How? By entering the item’s product code into the software on the handheld computer, which then determines its location within the store based on the linkage between that product code and the RFID number of the tag attached to that item, as well as where the tag was interrogated.

The software equipped on Chainway handheld computer runs independently from the company’s existing retail management software, which tracks when an item is purchased at the point of sale. Collected data from both software are transmitted to the back-end server under Wi-Fi connection, enabling applications based on the latest data.
