Field Mobility | RF Solution for Meter Reading

The VieTnam Electricity (EVN) is Vietnam’s largest power company, having an installed electricity generation capacity of 23,579 MW and a transmission network of 21,883 kilometers (updated to 2015). Large number of electric transmission produces heaven workload and expense of meter reading. ENV needed to send employees periodically to each physical location to read a meter. Besides, meter readers record data manually on site and enter it to computer back to the office. This process increases the chance for human error.

A radio frequency (RF) based automatic meter reading (AMR) system improves the situation. EVN equips its electric meters with AMR transceiver, which can receive radio signals sent by Chainway handheld computers. The unique serial number of this meter is captured by the handheld terminal, which in return instructs the transceiver to power-up and transmit its consumption, diagnostic, and status data to a central database for billing and analysis. In case of the meter’s transceiver not functioning, meter reader scans the 1D barcode of the meter to ensure its number, and manually enters visual readings for transferring to the database. So basically, Chainway handheld computer functions like a handheld RF capable reader and 1D barcode scanner, a receiver, and a transceiver. Wireless communication options include Wi-Fi and GPRS.

With the AMR system, meter readers don’t have to enter the property or home at residential and commercial areas; at distribution points by the road, meter readers don’t have to climb high to see the consumption or to locate and open an underground meter pit. It enhances employee safety and customer satisfaction.

Other benefits of the system include: save money by increased speed of reading, provide real-time billing information, reduce human errors and disputes, have fewer missed readings from being unable to access the meter, and promote energy conservation and customer savings with time-of-use consumption.
