Gas Meter Reading Solution Via Barcode & RFID Technology

Background

DP Novi Sad Gas is one of the leading retail gas sellers in Serbia. Over the years, the company has built a wide network of the gas pipelines for the gas distribution to local residents. DP Novi is also responsible for the projection of the gas system, installation of gas connection and arranges the gas equipment and related appliances. Manually maintain all these activities was an inefficient and time-consuming process. Thus, the company introduced the latest automatic system to make the process simple, fast and error free.

Challenges

1.  The company had a wide network and a big customers base. Thus, it was hard for the company's employees to note down the meter reading from every house. The existing system was time-consuming and required many workers to carry out this process.
2. Employees had to invest lots of time in repetitive work. Once meter reading was noted on papers, the staff used to enter all the records on company’s personal computers.
3. As real-time data was not available. Any problem identified during the inspection could not be informed immediately to the maintenance centre.

Solution

DP Novi Sad Gas successfully entertain all these challenges with barcode & RFID technology. The Company deployed Chainway's mobile computer for the meter reading process. These mobile computers were integrated with the barcode scanner, RFID reader, WiFi, and camera. To realize an automatic reading process, a worker with a mobile computer could scan barcode or RFID card attached with the meter. The data collected on the mobile computer could be transferred immediately to the company server via a wireless network.

Site Inspection - With the real-time capability, a site inspector could share the identified problem with maintenance team immediately. Besides that, the inspection team could take site images with a mobile computer as proof.

Effects

1. The new system makes the inspection work more convenient and faster. The paperwork has been replaced with automatic scanning which hardly takes a few seconds for the meter reading process.
2. Automatic data capturing has reduced the operational cost and significantly improve profitability.
3. Real-time images of the site can be shared with the maintenance team. It brings more clarity about which equipment needs to be replaced.
4. data related to all the complaints and maintenance is available any time. It is easy to analyze the data at the time of any inquiry.
