Background These days, managing traffic at toll plazas is quite a tough task as toll management has to collect the toll from an individual vehicle. The manual toll collection process is time-consuming and subject to errors in the collection amount. These issues are visible in toll plazas all over the world. Thus, toll management in Colombia approached Chainway company to resolve these issues by applying an RFID Technology in toll collection.
Challenges
Increase in traffic year by year has slow down the traffic speed at toll plazas. Further, manual toll collection process has accelerated this issue many folds.
Long queues of the vehicles at toll booth has reduced the revenue of toll companies as they have to release the vehicles free of charge after vehicles cross the predefined traffic limit.
Thousands of vehicles cross the tolls every day. It was a time-consuming process for toll management to calculate everyday collection of amounts.
Toll monitoring and supervision are not very effective as all the data and information cannot be reported in real-time.
Solution With the purpose of reducing the traffic at toll plazas, Expressway authority of Colombia approached Chainway Information Technology Co. Ltd. Therefore, Chainway management came up with an RFID base solution which contains handheld RFID reader and tags. Every regular vehicle was enrolled with an RFID Tags and could be top-up with money in advance. Toll staff could use Chainway’s UHF RFID reader to read the vehicle’s tags pasted on the windscreen. A pre-installed application in handheld calculated and auto deducted the amount from the card. All the data shared in real-time with toll server via a wireless network.
Effects
The new system has made the toll plaza more intelligent with a significant reduction in traffic jam and errors.
It becomes easier for Toll management to monitor each activity at toll booth because all the data, information and images are shared in real-time with management.
With less traffic, toll plaza is collecting more revenue than before.
