An RFID Solution for Meat Processing Industry

Background
Safe food is the first priority for every human being. Today millions of people are suffering from infected food across the world. Thus, the issue has grabbed the attention of many countries and force the respective government to regulate a guideline for safe food. When we talk about the meat industry, we could find a long processing chain from slaughterhouses to finished products at the departmental store. Under the new guideline, slaughterhouses must have records of animals to ensure that sacrifice animals do not have any disease. The guideline has become a challenge for slaughterhouses to collect the data manually. The traditional method subject to error and could not be tracked in real-time. However, some slaughterhouses have adopted RFID technology to solve these issues.

Challenges
  1. Every slaughterhouse receives the number of livestock batch every day. Thus, it is difficult to distinguish them as per their receiving schedule which may lead to meat spoilage.
  2. The health condition of livestock is the primary concern. The manual method is not effective to monitor and record the health data of every livestock.
  3. There is always a scope for data manipulation. Slaughterhouses usually manipulate the livestock’s weight and quantity data to earn quick money.
  4. In the absence of real-time data, all the concern departments have no clear idea about the whole operation.

Solution
A slaughterhouse in Guangxi, China had consulted with Shenzhen Chainway Information Technology Co. Ltd. about the issues. With the result, Chainway came up with an RFID solution. This solution contained an RFID device and LF tags with a unique ID. These tags were peered with each livestock and recorded with all the information such as livestock id, medical history, source, age, etc. Chainway C4000 reader could be used for write and read the information. An operator with a C4000 device captured the data by waving the device near livestock. This device supported with WiFi and 3G network through which data transferred immediately to the main server, so that department head could access real-time data from slaughterhouse to finished products.

 Effects
  1. RFID solution has effectively implemented the first in first out principle. Now slaughterhouses can easily collect and update the data.
  2. With the complete record of livestock data, any possibility of an unsafe product could be identified in advance.
  3. Every record is available in real-time. Any authorized officer or department can access any information about a particular product.
  4. Earlier workers invested lots of time in recording the data. The new system has saved time and improve the operational cost of slaughterhouses.
