Barcode Solution for Cylinder Tracking

Background
Distribution the most critical part for the supply of a gas cylinder. From company to end consumer distributors are responsible for the delivery of a cylinder and unfortunately, this is the most compromised area where lots of manipulation take place. A loss of a cylinder in transect is a loss for distributors and leakage in the cylinder could be a great danger for a consumer. Beside this, untimely delivery and gas theft are also a big challenge for gas distributors. The case study is about a gas cylinder distributor in north China which realized the need to apply a suitable technology to overcome these issues.

Challenges
  1. Manual data entry process at the distribution center consumed a lot of time and usually end up with the delay in delivery.
  2. Manual process was not reliable which is why sometimes workers delivered the cylinders to the wrong customers.
  3. Information printed on the cylinder could be manipulated easily by a delivery boy. In the absence of real-time data, customers could not find the true source of information.

Solution
The cylinder distributor identified a barcode technology which could help him to resolve the above mention issues. Thus, he cooperated with Chainway company for the implementation of a barcode-based tracking solution. In the solution, a unique 2D barcode was assigned to each cylinder. The barcode id contained information such as cylinder identification number, weight, gas volume, price, etc. Before the delivery, a worker with chainway mobile computer scanned the cylinder’s barcode and assign the particular cylinder with consumer id for which they had received the order. The information was stored in the distributor’s database which further shared with the respected consumer. On the other side, a consumer could be assured for timely delivery. At the time of delivery, the consumer could check the cylinder information in real-time. When gas was consumed, a delivery boy scanned the empty cylinder and exchange with a loaded one. This activity ensured that the right order was delivered to the right consumer.

Effects
  1. The barcode solution has increased the efficiency of the distributor. Now the distributor has total control on the delivery process and receives a great return on investment.
  2. With the real-time data access, delivery of a specific cylinder can be tracked, which helps in identifying the reason for a delay in delivery and effectively handling the consumer grievances.
  3. Accurate data availability at the consumer end has stopped the manipulation and gas thefts. Thus, the company has achieved great consumer satisfaction and a hike in revenue.
