Background
The case study is about a refinery with a large-scale operation. This company occupied a large area and its workers had to cover a long distance to reach canteen from their workplace. So, many of them preferred to dine out instead of the canteen. This situation had created another problem for canteen, due to an unexpected visit of workers, canteen management could not estimate the everyday food requirement. Some time they prepared extra food and vice-versa. Another challenge was to maintain a proper flow of workers in the canteen. Extra security guards were deployed to maintain order. Thus, management had to bear extra expenses for this operation. With these issues, refinery management made the decision to implemented a solution.
Challenges
It took lots of time for workers to cover the distance between canteen and workplace.
It was difficult to analyze worker’s food preferences and their gathering in the canteen at a time.
Management spends extra budget for security guards which had been hired for workers management in dining hours.
Solutions
Refinery consulted Chainway to provide the best solution for the above-mentioned issues. The major issue was to estimate food preparation requirements. So, Chainway suggested a solution where an individual worker could place his order in advance. The most important part of the whole solution was Chainway C4050 Q4 mobile computer. Workers could easily place their order every day on this mobile computer. On the other side, the canteen manager received the orders and could easily estimate the food preparation for the day. To save the worker’s time and provide food delivery services, canteen’s delivery boy carried C4050 Q4 mobile computer and scanned the workers HF cards to confirm the right order was delivered to write worker.
Effects
Now there is a positive effect on worker efficiency as they get more time to rest. Now they do not need to walk much and spend time in the queue. The worker now orders on the mobile computer and get food delivery on the working station.
The new solution ensures accuracy. The delivery boy read worker’s card before delivering the food parcel. So that worker gets exactly what they have ordered.
Food wastage has reduced effectively. Now food is prepared on the bases of order received.
Management has reduced operational cost on extra guards which were appointed for canteen management.
The solution has great ROI as more workers place an order for delivery. It increases the profitability of canteen a lot.
