How a Medical Store Chain Improved the Efficiency with a Barcode Solution?

Background
A retail chain pharmacy known as Nepstar Chain Drugstore has headquartered in Shenzhen. The company is pioneered in retail pharmacy and now become a leading chain of a drug store in China. Since the incorporation, the company has opened 2000 medical outlets in China. Nepstar directly deals with all the stores, so every procurement, inventory, warehouse, and logistics services are centralized and fulfill by company management. Nepstar services generally include OTC drugs, herbal medicines, personal care products, nutritional supplements. With centralized management, the company realized an automatic data capturing solution which could centrally manage inventories to improve the quality and efficiency of services.

Challenges
  1. The company had many distribution centers with a wide variety of medicines. Managing inventory with a manual process was time-consuming and may lead to error.
  2. The warehouse operator had to check a bunch of items to search for a particular product.
  3. Last update on latest medicines was not possible. Sometime medical outlets could not be aware of new medicine stock. With the result, they keep on selling the old stuff unless it is stockout.
  4. Proper track on sales was not possible. Sales data in each store was managed manually and could not be shared on a daily basis.
Solutions

Drug Stock-taking
Every medicine box in inventory was pasted with a unique barcode. This barcode holds all the information such a medicine name, MRP, Expiry date, quantity etc. Operator in the warehouse can scan these barcodes with a Chainway mobile computer and finished the stock-taking task by updating the backend database with captured data. This system is much better than a manual process where the stock operator has to keep records on paper, which consume lots of time and effort.

Intelligent Sorting
The company deployed a Chainway PDA a sorting station. Operator scan the barcode label form items and distinguish the items on the basis of type, item code, and dispatch locations. Now items pickup and distribution have become very easy. An error occurred in the manual sorting process is now almost negligible.
 
Data Management
The administration has a central database system which is updated by every stock facility via mobile computer. Now, the administration can check the status of stock and sales for each medical outlet. Central management can control the inventory status, future demand for stock in each warehouse.

Effects
  1. The whole system is now accurate and fast.
  2. Drug picking, sorting and dispatch process is now automatic and take a few minutes instead of hours.
  3. Automatic stock management has illuminated the shortage and overflow of inventory.
  4. With the fast and accurate delivery of medicines, the company has improved the brand image and reduce the operation cost significantly.
