A Mobile Computer- Two in One Solution for Inventory Management & Assets Tracking

Background 
We are sharing a case study of an IT company which provide services to government and privet sector companies. The services mainly include IT system development, maintenance, and support. A time before, this company got a project where it was asked to suggest a barcode base assets tracking & inventory management solution for a client. The project required the real-time database management of assets & inventory items in a common database with details such as item code, location, purchase date, custodian and last maintenance records etc. This IT company was also a channel partner for Shenzhen Chainway Info. Tech. Co. Ltd. (a leading manufacturer of RFID & Barcode HHT) Thus, Chainway helped the company in the successful implementation of this project.

Challenges
  1. Implementation of multiple projects through a single solution was quite difficult. End client wanted to apply warehouse solution and assets tracking in a single application.
  2. The manual process of inventory management was already very confusing. above that, warehouse assets had to be tracked. It was highly complicated to understand and streamline both the requirements.
  3. The company could not afford an expensive solution. So, the service provider had to offer a cost-effective device for implementation.

Solution
Chainway proposed a barcode-based solution where assets tracking plus warehouse management could be performed concurrently. Chainway C4050 mobile computer was picked for this solution. In the first phase of the solution, unique barcode labels were assigned for every item and asset. These barcodes had unique numbers coded with product information such as item name, production date, pricing, assets name, maintenance records, time of purchase and service etc. In the second phase, every time a new item entered in the warehouse was labeled with a barcode. Warehouse operator equipped with C4050 mobile computer could scan the item’s barcode and update the backend database on a real-time basis. With this solution, the operator could perform the stock-in and stock-out task very quickly. On the other hand, these mobile computers also maintained records of warehouse assets. Operator straightforwardly scans the barcode pasted on assets and upgrade the information in the main database. This process ensured the availability of right assets at the right time by accessing the details such as location, condition, maintenance records etc.

Effect
  1. The entire manual process has been changed into automatic inventory and assets management.
  2. Management has access to real-time monitoring of inventory. Now all the records and statement of inventory are generated automatically. Operators in the warehouse know which item is stored where and when a particular item required to dispatch.
  3. Maintenance of assets become easier. Management can ensure the availability of assets and pre-estimate the requirement of assets so that operational work could not be affected in the future.
  4. The end-client received the return on investment and also achieve the economy of operation with proper utilization of warehouse assets.
